    The basics

What Is a Spinal Nerve Root?

Nerve roots branch off the spinal cord and exit between the vertebrae to carry signals to your arms, legs and organs. Because the openings are small, swelling, disc material or bone spurs can easily compress them. Nerve root irritation in the neck is called cervical radiculopathy, and in the lower back it is called lumbar radiculopathy, which often causes sciatica.

    What is a pinched nerve?
A pinched nerve is a nerve root compressed or irritated by surrounding structures, causing pain, numbness, tingling or weakness.
Can a chiropractor help a pinched nerve?
Yes. Decompression, adjustments, laser therapy and exercises can relieve pressure and inflammation on many pinched nerves.
How long does a pinched nerve take to heal?
Many improve within a few weeks to a few months, depending on the cause and severity.
    What is radiculopathy?
Radiculopathy is irritation or injury of a spinal nerve root, causing symptoms that radiate into the arms or legs.
Can a pinched nerve cause weakness?
Yes. Compression can affect the nerve’s ability to signal muscles, causing weakness.
Does spinal decompression help nerve pain?
Decompression reduces pressure on discs and nerve roots and is commonly used for nerve pain.
Can a car accident cause a pinched nerve?
Yes. Crashes can injure discs and joints that compress nerve roots, sometimes days later.
    When is nerve pain serious?
Progressive weakness, loss of bladder or bowel control or groin numbness need emergency care.
Can a pinched nerve heal on its own?
Some do, but care can speed recovery and reduce the risk of lasting weakness.
Do I need an MRI for a pinched nerve?
An MRI may be recommended for severe, worsening or persistent nerve symptoms.
